Buenos Aires chosen for Google environmental initiative

Google recently launched the Environmental Insights Exploreran environmental initiative to measure the carbon emissions of a city from all possible sources. The program also measures the city’s capacity to generate solar power from available roofs. Argentina’s capital will be one of the first cities to host the study, designed to help cities design more efficient transportation systems and options for renewable energy.

The initiative comes after Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, the regional governor, visited Google’s campus in Silicon Valley.

“It is great news that Buenos Aires was chosen by one of the most innovative companies in the world. This platform will provide us with more accurate information about transportation flows, emissions, and the city’s potential to generate solar energy. This is a great contribution to help Buenos Aires become a smarter, greener, and more resilient city,” said Rodríguez.

Google developed this tool alongside the Energy and Environment group of the Buenos Aires mayor’s office, using Google Maps to analyze some of the city’s emissions. The research will help the BA government make plans for environmental initiatives for the next 20 years.
