Monashees raises US$150M to invest in Latin American startups

LatAm List – With over US$430M of capital under management, monashees is one of Latin America’s largest venture capital firms. Their portfolio companies have gone on to raise over US$2B after receiving funding from the São Paulo-based firm.

monashees recently closed their eighth fund for US$150M from Temasek, a fund from the Singaporean government, CreditEase, a Chinese fintech company, Instagram cofounder Mike Krieger, the University of Minnesota endowment, and Horsley Bridge Partners. They also received investment from more than 15 Brazilian family offices.

monashees has been involved in many of Latin America’s biggest deals, including as early investors in Brazil’s 99 – acquired by Didi Chuxing for US$1B in January – and in Colombia’s Rappi, which recently received US$200M at a valuation of US$1B.

“The recent billion-dollar acquisition of 99 by DiDi is not only a milestone for the local ecosystem, but validation of this sentiment and suggests that there’s no liquidity hurdle for great companies in Latin America. We are excited to partner with monashees as it continues to find and nurture the best opportunities going forward,” said Stuart Mason, Chief Investment Officer at the University of Minnesota in the original article for TechCrunch.
