SoftBank appoints new Managing Partner for LatAm fund

LatAm List – Japanese tech giant SoftBank will open an office in Buenos Aires, Argentina run by Andy Freire, former Argentine minister and serial entrepreneur. Freire was also named Managing Partner of SoftBank’s $5B Latin American Fund and will participate in weekly meetings along with four other partners and Marcelo Claure, SoftBank’s COO.

The former Argentine minister will work towards identifying prospective business ventures in Argentina as well as other countries including Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Colombia.

“We are looking for the next Globant and Despegar, the future megaunicorns,” stated Freire in an interview with La Nación. He added, “In Latin America, the capital invested is very little. We have to see which are the areas with most potential. Clearly in Argentina it’s software, fintechs, and logistics. We need entrepreneurs with a mental chip to think big.”

SoftBank will also be operating from two other offices in Miami and Brazil to select and evaluate candidates and opportunities the region has to offer.
