Andrew Ng’s companies expand to Colombia

LatAm ListAndrew Ng, former CEO of Coursera and founder of the Google Brain project, recently opened a second office for his AI projects in Medellin, Colombia.

The projects include Deeplearning.ai, an edtech startup, AI Fund, a startup studio for building AI companies, and Landing.ai which helps enterprises use AI.

According to TechCrunch, Ng chose Medellin after investigating a wide range of cities in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Over the last few years, Colombia’s startup ecosystem has been transformed thanks to incubators like Ruta N

“I see early signs of momentum for Colombia being a talent magnet both regionally and globally,” said Ng in an interview with TechCrunch.

Ng explains the importance of having AI hubs outside of Silicon Valley and China to provide a different perspective to the global community.

“We are able to share our AI ecosystem and Silicon Valley know-how with Medellín,” announced Ng. “We’re equally thrilled for our Silicon Valley team to be learning from the Medellín community. Local knowledge and innovation shared with a global community is what will catapult the technology forward.”

Ng’s plans for the next two years are to expand his Medellin team of 50 members to between 150 and 200 employees.
