LatamList – Banco BS2, a Brazilian bank and main shirt sponsor of Brazilian soccer team Flamengo, will end its deal with the sports club on June 30th– six months earlier than what had been agreed on. However, the club is close to signing a new sponsorship deal with the tech giant Amazon.
In 2019, the bank had signed a two-year deal with Flamengo reportedly worth $2.8M (R$15M) a year with additional bonuses based on sales. The bank would offer fans Flamengo-branded BS2 accounts and cards as part of the deal.
According to Brazilian news sources, the decision to terminate the deal was directly attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. As sports across the board have canceled their leagues and seasons, many sport’s clubs have had sponsorships suspended.
“There are some proposals on Flamengo’s table. But people always talk about one. And I’m telling you, it’s not the most likely. We should come to an agreement in the next 3 days and get approval. We want this new sponsor stamping Flamengo’s shirt on July 1st. But fans will be in for a big surprise,” said Rodolfo Landim, the current president of Flamengo.
If Flamengo closes the Amazon deal, FlaTV, the club’s TV channel, will potentially be able to broadcast globally on Amazon Prime.
