MercadoLibre launches new online department stores

LatamListMercadoLibre, the largest e-commerce platform in Latin America, launches new department stores modeled on the world’s leading marketplace, Amazon. The launch is part of MercadoLibre’s rapid expansion throughout the region.

The COVID-19 pandemic greatly accelerated the growth of the marketplace, starting with the launch of SupermercadoLibre, an online grocery store. In conjunction with the supermarket, MercadoLibre will now launch its online department store as Falabella, the Chilean department store outlet, pulls out of various markets in the region.

The new marketplace will act as a department store for MercadoLibre offering a range of products from games, electrical goods, and basic homeware. MercadoLibre has been planning the expansion for some time, hiring a team of purchasing executives responsible for selecting store suppliers.

“We have been making progress in working models with sellers to continue providing the best shopping experience to users. This includes products exclusive to MercardoLibre and the launch of new designer labels in some departments,” explained the company.

The business model is structured on the success of Amazon Basics and a third-party platform for connected retailers. In particular, Mercado Libre has given due attention to the logistical branch of e-commerce to ensure efficient stock management and cost-effective delivery.

After making a purchase, customers can expect their order to be sent out in the next 24 hours. The platform will integrate last-mile logistics into their system and AI technology to work with local partners in the region to ensure the greatest efficiency in delivery after regional transportation.
