Chile’s landline telephone companies have seen consistent declines throughout the first quarter of 2018. According to statistics cited by El Mercurio, fixed line phones saw call traffic fall by an average of 20% per month throughout January, February, and March.
Meanwhile, mobile subscriptions were up 2.5% and 3% in February and March, despite a small drop in January.The National Institute of Statistics (INE with the Spanish acronym) announced that this growth comes from increased purchasing of both prepaid and subscription cellphone plans. However, INE stated in El Mercurio:
“Call traffic through pre-paid phone plans fell because customers are starting to transition from pay-as-you-go services to subscription plans.”
Internet subscriptions are also on the rise, increasing by approximately 5% monthly through the first quarter of 2018. For the most part, these new clients are individuals or families, rather than businesses.
The pattern of mobile and Internet growth in Chile means that more and more of Chile’s population has access to the Internet at home and through their phones.
