Mercado Pago gets licenses for card operation in Chile

Prepaid card

After almost two years, la Comisión para el Mercado Financiero (CMF) granted Mercado Pago the licenses to become a prepaid card issuer and card operator in Chile. The operator license implies that Mercado Pago becomes the first payment service provider to become a card operator in the Chilean market.

“We are happy to have gotten both licenses from CMF. This is a relevant milestone that will support the work that we’ve been doing for several years now. 2021 and 2022 will be our most important years in terms of new launches, and will allow us to consolidate ourselves as one of the preferred payment options by Chileans, and continue to strengthen our position in Latin America as the most complete free digital account on the market ”, said Matías Spagui, Director at Mercado Pago.

This milestone will allow the company to advance in its objective of democratizing access to the financial and payment system in Chile and throughout the region.

The Fintech company explained that this license, through specific alliances, will allow Mercado Pago to offer a free digital account with functionalities already operational in other countries. These new tools will be added to the Mercado Pago solutions, facilitating both businesses and users: online payments, payment links through social networks, QR code payments, mobile top-ups, among others.
